四十歲的「中佬」湯馬斯，住在比利時市郊的一間大屋，太太漂亮動人、人見人愛；工作稱心滿意，生活無憂無慮。但是多年來，湯馬斯都有一個秘密夢想，就是放棄已經擁有的一切，從此消失於世上，進入未知的新國度。憑著這種幻想，他順利日復一日，渡過平凡生活。一天，人到中年的湯馬斯，再也受不了沉悶的人生，決定付諸行動，製造死亡假象，消失於無人的土地之上。但是，消失過後，他開始迷失起來，不知道下一個目標是什麼，也不知道這個夢想應該如何實現下去。

They live in a nice house in the outskirts of a Belgian city. They have good jobs.
