Martial Club
Synopsis
Martial Club is a work of balance. The story of the mythic figure Wong Fei-hung’s youth, the film posits the making of a master on his learning to temper the violent and ego-inflating nature of fighting skills with the martial code of hard work, humility and integrity. The code articulates the convictions of director Lau Kar-leung, in real life a third-generation student of Master Wong and a dedicated disciple of the martial spirit. He skillfully moderates his manifesto with film’s mandate to entertain, staging Wong’s coming of age with a masterfully calibrated trajectory of funny youthful antics and beautifully choreographed action towards a final showdown of gravitas. Lau had faithfully played the villain in numerous Wong Fei-hung films, and his ascent to a master’s role in the myth’s making is a Hong Kong success story. (This film is part of the “Once Upon a Hero: The Wong Fei-hung Saga” programme)
