故事簡介

踏入九十年代的香港，難民社會早已變身金融都市，香港被視為資本主義自由經濟的成功例子。追求金錢物質是生活品味，甚至是人生目標，除了法治和自由，一個「賭」字代表的拼搏心，更是許多港人的精神支柱。王晶很早便摸透香港人的賭性，往日的「千王」、「千霸」升級「賭神」、「賭聖」，著power suit和長褸，吃在中環才買得到的朱古力。豪裝之下，草根小子的精叻本色卻不移，搖碎骰子減少點數，如此著數是賭術還是千術？撞壞腦袋，寄身鄉郊，發了一場nostalgia for suffering――懷苦日子舊的春夢，可只要吃中環朱古力，賭技絲毫不減。賭性頑強，必能翻身。賭神的傷是從貧窮躍升豪富，身心未能協調產生的精神錯亂。可幸港產片始終重視情義，賭神助萍水相逢的行家報殺父之仇，落拓江湖時，又結下一段師徒情。王晶電影常能捕捉庶民心理，盡情利用，樂在其中。《賭神》集天時地利人和，記下資本主義和香港民情高度自滿的姿態。

God of Gamblers

Synopsis

Gambling films, which were very popular in the late 1980s, are the opposite of Money (1959) in its attitude towards getting rich quick. Hong Kong by then had unapologetically embraced free-market capitalism. Not only was unearned wealth no longer disdained, the urge for it was in fact openly expressed and readily accepted. Gambling, with its added dimensions of risk, globetrotting glamour and luxurious trappings like casinos and tuxedos, lends itself naturally to film. God of Gamblers, directed by the unapologetically commercial Wong Jing, at once celebrates this attitude towards money and seeks reprieve from it. In a plot inspired by Rain Man (1988), the title deity (the great Chow Yun-fat) suffers a head trauma and reverts briefly to a child-like state, a vacation in innocence from high-stake capitalism. But, alas, nurtured by a young hustler (Andy Lau, with the callow charm of a rising star), he eventually saunters back into the ring…
